Eli Whiteside’s two-run double was the key hit in a four-run fifth inning as the Giants defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 Thursday in Scottsdale, Ariz.
After the Giants’ first 12 batters went down in order, Juan Uribe, Fred Lewis and Eugenio Velez loaded the bases with singles. Whiteside’s double then scored two. John Bowker
tied the game with a run-scoring groundout, and Andres Torres
capped the rally with an RBI single.
Other highlights:
Barry Zito: Zito gave up one run on three hits and two walks — including one to Brewers pitcher Jeff Suppan — in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Sergio Romo: Romo struck out two in working a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Injury updates
Mark DeRosa: The left fielder who is recovering from offseason wrist surgery expects to begin taking batting practice this week, and likely will see his first action of spring training sometime next week.
Travis Ishikawa: The first baseman, who suffered torn ligaments in his foot, took soft-toss battling practice and is expected to take grounders in the field Friday.
Freddy Sanchez: Still mending from offseason shoulder surgery, Sanchez could begin swinging a bat next week. Still, the Giants don’t project he’ll be ready by Opening Day.
Emmanuel Burriss: The infielder, who reported soreness in the same foot he injured last season, believes all he did was tear scar tissue in that foot in Wednesday’s spring training opener. If that’s the case, he could be back playing next week. Burriss is still awaiting results of an MRI taken Thursday.
UP NEXT: Matt Cain takes to the mound as the Giants face the Colorado Rockies at 12:05 p.m. PST at Scottsdale.
