An MRI on the left foot of Giants infielder Emmanuel Burriss revealed a break in the same bone that he broke last season.
Burriss suffered the original injury on July 5 of last year while running the bases. He had surgery on July 10 and missed the rest of the season.
Burriss reinjured the foot on Wednesday while running the bases. He’ll wear a walking boot on his foot for the next four weeks, but it is unclear how long he’ll be out. The best guess is he won’t be ready to return to the majors until May.
Burriss had been battling for a reserve infielder spot. His injury now opens the door for Kevin Frandsen to win that spot on the roster.
